Definitely talking to our customers and knowing that I’m making a difference in their lives. I started a couple companies before joining Zenefits so I’m very aware of how crazy things can get and how much there is to constantly do – being able to offload all the complexity of HR for a growing company and all its employees is a huge win. We actually used Zenefits at my last company, so it’s great having the perspective from the other side too.
Every day has different challenges, so things stay interesting. Some things that come to mind:
The week before Z2 the entire team was in the office past midnight almost every day – definitely not sustainable. But being able to launch a product we were extremely proud of in front of hundreds of customers made it worth it.
We still experience the existential roller coaster of being a true startup. We’re constantly trying new things to evaluate what really solves our customers’ problems and what is a distraction. It’s forced us to do some real soul searching that’s resulted in significant shifts in strategy. While not easy, there’s no doubt in my mind that all the ups and downs have given us a more coherent and focused long-term strategy and really made us stronger as a company.
Thoughtful, deliberate, but action-oriented – willing to constantly think through problems from first principles to improve the product and make our customers’ lives easier. Resilient through whatever changes come their way with an uncanny ability to always step up to new challenges and focus on what’s important. The team is the reason I look forward to coming in every morning.
