An Open Chat with Rajiv Bagora, VP of Engineering

May 4, 2018

Hi, Rajiv! Thanks for chatting with us today. We’re so excited to have you at ZenNation and can’t wait to learn from you. First and foremost, we’d love to get to know you better. Who are you?! Where did you grow up? Have you lived in San Francisco for a long time?

It is great to be able to spend some time talking with you. I grew up in India, completed my Bachelor’s in Engineering there and then moved to the U.S. to get my Masters in Electrical Engineering. I must say, landing in Nebraska from Mumbai during the winter was quite a shock on top of moving so far from family! I then moved to the Bay Area shortly after earning my Masters and have now been in the Bay Area for more than 20 years.

When did you first decide you wanted to pursue a career in Engineering? Can you share a story?

From a very young age, I really took to building and tinkering with things. When I was around 8 years old, Legos were becoming quite popular, but their availability was pretty limited in India. When my Dad was traveling on an international business trip, I asked that he bring back Legos with him. He bought a very nice Lego set from which I built this large, mechanically operated car. That experience in a sense ignited my path for a career in Engineering. My interest in Computer Science was built during my Master’s program where I spent a lot of time developing software for different image compression techniques.

How did you first learn about Zenefits? What made you want to join our team?

I have been keeping an eye on Zenefits for a few years now, starting in its hyper-growth phase. I very much feel Zenefits is on a transformational journey at the moment, and it’s exciting to join this new phase with the technology, the people and the right leadership in place to accomplish its mission of reimagining the modern employee experience. The company is very focused on delivering a solution that will simplify the lives of small and medium-sized business owners and entrepreneurs. Finally, I have been very impressed with the executive leadership at Zenefits and their breadth and depth of experience.

As a relatively new member of ZenNation, what is one of the challenges we are currently tackling that gets you excited?

There are many challenges that get me excited. One of them that I am stoked about is the opportunity we have to continue building a more comprehensive product offering for our customers and to be able to have our customers realize the benefits of those products.

Is there something that stands out to you about engineering at Zenefits that makes our culture unique?

Everyone at Zenefits has been so welcoming and supportive, it has been amazing. I also love the flexibility and openness to try out new ideas and perspectives. The engineering team at Zenefits is extremely passionate to build customer-focused products.

What’s your go-to breakfast place in San Francisco?

I live in the South Bay so I must stay true to my neck of the woods. One of my favorite breakfast spots is Los Gatos Café in downtown Los Gatos.

What’s your favorite snack in our kitchens?

I love the Cajun-spiced cashews, they have a good kick to them.
